TRI-RECS Tools

by Darlene Zimmerman & Joy Hoffman

TRI-RECS TOOLS from EZ Quilting make those pesky triangles a BREEZE!  These rulers are the easy way to make accurate triangles within squares and divided rectangles.

Two Rulers,  Tri - 6-1/2" x 6-3/4"  &  Rec - 6-1/2" x 3-3/4", and Instruction Booklet included.

Tutorial:

When paired, a Tri unit and two Recs units will always make a triangle within a square. To determine the strip width, add 1/2" seam allowance to the size of the finished square.  When two Recs units are paired, the result is a divided rectangle twice as tall as it is wide. Once again, determine the finished height and add 1/2" for the seam allowance.  For example, for a 4" finished triangle within a square, or for 4" x 2" rectangles, cut 4 1/2" strips and align the bottom of the strips with the 4 1/2" lines for cutting.

Cutting

To cut Tri triangles, first cut the appropriate strip width. Then lay the top edge of the tool along the top edge of the strip and align the bottom of the strip with the appropriate line on the tool. Cut on both sides of the tool.

Finishing the Edges

The top edge of the completed circle can be turned under 1/4" in a smooth curve, or the top of each wedge can be curved by using the template given to recut the tops of the wedges after they've been cut from the fabric strip.

To cut Recs triangles for triangles within squares, cut the same size strip for the Recs triangles as you did for the Tri triangles. Fold the strip right sides together to automatically cut both a right and a left triangle. Align the top of the tool with the top of the strip as shown. Cut as indicated. Trim off the "magic angle". This will make alignment for piecing a breeze.

When cutting divided rectangles, determine your strip width by adding a 1/2" seam allowance to the finished height of your divided rectangle. Lay light and dark strips right sides up to get left and right triangles for the divided rectangles. Align and cut the same way, making certain to trim off the "magic angle".

Rotate the tool, align the top edge of the tool with the bottom of the strip and the top of the strip with the appropriate line on the tool. Cut as indicated.

Piecing Triangles Within Squares

With right sides together, lay one Recs triangle on the left side of the Tri triangle as shown. Note the alignment of the "magic angle" on the Recs triangle with the bottom of the Tri triangle. Align the long edges as shown and stitch. Press.

With right sides together, stitch the second Recs triangle to the right side of the Tri triangle to complete the square. Press toward the Recs triangles. Trim the "dog-ears" and include in your pieced block.

Piecing Rectangles

Place two Recs triangles right sides together, aligning the "magic angle" as shown. Stitch and press toward the darker fabric.

Trim the "dog-ears" and include in your pieced block.
